Can we still describe something lame as "gay"?

I was workin in an office and this guy was telling me that "deck the halls" w/mathew broderick and danny devito is on hbo all the time and whatever...
so I say "yeah, that movie is so f***ing gay" and someone says to me "you know it's not cool for you to say that... you could be offending somebody"
Is this really offensive or taboo now say s*** is gay?

i think calling stuff gay is ok, i think offence should only really be taken from meaning, if you consider gay as in homosexuality negative, and thats why you criticize things by using the word gay, then that is wrong.

I happen to have a gay friend and i think he's the bomb. So if i told someone that was so "gay", i guess i'd sound like i was insulting him, but i wouldn't be.

I think his wacked-out personality -- kicks butt. Way more fun than "normal" people. I happen to like gay males. They are funnier than hell.

It's just one of those terms that people use without thinking about the literal meaning, like saying that something is 'buggered' or 'f*****'. I hear primary school kids at my local shops calling stuff 'gay' all the time. They don't mean something reminds them of a homosexual, of course. I'm sure in time 'gay' will become a word only gay people can use - a bit like how black people are really the only ones today who can use the word 'n*****'.
