Don't lose hope!

I've had people (IRL) tell me that they can't quit smoking because they've been smoking for "too long to quit now!" My grandma was one of them not so long ago.

I saw my grandma today and she showed me her necklace. On one side, it says "A Date to Remember" and the other says "May 22, 2008." I, of course, asked the significance of the date.

She said, "that's the day I quit smoking for good!"

I'm so proud of my grandmother. She smoked for nearly 63 years before she made up her mind to quit. She was certain that she'd never be able to do it because of her age (she's in her 80s) and doctors have been telling her for at least 30 years that she needs to quit. But until she made up her mind to quit, she couldn't do it.

So if you're trying to quit smoking and having a hard time, don't give up! Hang in there. You can do it!

You don't have to. I posted to encourage people who are trying to quit and struggling.

I stopped for 3 years and started up again. I know it's got to be the right time or it won't work. I stopped cold turkey and without any help and could sit with smokers and it never bothered me.

The one thing I never did as so many do is preach to smokers after I stopped as most tend to do. It's just way too hypocritical for me.

I'm sure if and when it's time to quit again it will be done!

Usually people have to want to quit on their own....

Someone else's advice usually doesn't work.

I used to think that smoking tasted good.

That is until one day I thought, "Would I eat an apple that tastes like this?"

Smoking is kind of gross with that frame of mind.

Perhaps, but a little inspiration for someone who has already made the decision to try to quit might help

This thread isn't giving advice. It's offering encouragement to people who are trying to quit and finding it difficult.

Good for her! I think that her story can be encouraging to some people.

OK! You don't want to quit. So why not let those who like hearing these stories and gain some hope from them come on and not have to read negative comments like this.

That's how I did it too, cold turkey; but I hated, and still hate being around smokers. I just can't stand the smell now.

..and I do tend to try and talk smokers out of smoking, but not for being a hypocrite; I saw up close and personal the ravages smoking can take on a persons life; my mother died from the end stages of C.O.P.D..., and her sister, and father before her from emphysema..
I just try to talk sense into people now and then in the hopes they will listen..
