Psst those things happened (civil rights you mentioned) because of forums private and public, protesting and just being out there talking to people. People CAN walk and chew gum at the same time. The people elect the law makers. If people who are voting are against everything you mentioned they'll elect law makers who agree with them. You have to be out there to change people's minds to vote for law makers who are on the side of civil rights.

On the whole choice thing, ill explain how it worked for me. Its probably very similar to a lot of gays. Basically, when I was young(before puberty) I had no intrest in male or females. Noone really did. kissing is "gross" for a time. When it was semi-ok, I noticed that guys and girls were "dating". I had no desire to do this with either gender, but I pretended to date a girl, just because everyone else was. There were no feelings, we were just kids. Once puberty hit, I noticed guys like I havent before. I also know that ive never felt any sort of attraction to girls, EVER. I soon had my first crush on a guy, which I kept secret until I lost intrest in him. It stayed that way until I had another crush in high school(which im still in now, still hang out with that guy). I came out to him, and hes straight. Things have stayed relatively the same since.

I know everyone's story is different, but they all start out in generally the same way.

Psst, the duly elected and sworn in law makers don't hang out on public inter net forums. They be sitting up in thier offices and reading correspondence form the constituents that voted for them and writing laws.

There are things that really need changing. But tossing opinions and passing "Psst" secerts around in a public forum ain't the best place to be spending all the energy and time to the best use.
I won't even touch the statement about public forums you made in your post , when taken in the context of the public forums i used in my post your statement is illogical to say the least.
