I think I can see why a lot of today's youth might find it boring. Firstly, they have to read it, that puts it behind the eight-ball right from the start. Then, it has no lights and whistles, no scores to compete for. It contains no aliens, no obvious baddies, and the "hero" is a frightened little boy, not exactly appealing to them.
However, once they start it, many find it is actually a good yarn, though they would never admit it, lol.
It was written in a different time, and FOR a different time, and I wonder if a bunch of modern kids would make for a different outcome, or perhaps not?
