alot of ppl probably don't say a** in the UK because it could mean you are referring to someone as a donkey type animal, arse is more appropriate if you mean the rear end

"More importantly, how did we get a** from arse? British English speakers still spell it arse, but as they are non-rhotic (not pronouncing r's between a consonant and a vowel) it comes out as "ahss". That approximate pronunciation was kept in the U.S. but the spelling was changed to match it."

I haven't met anyone in the UK that says it like that, are-suh is how i would spell it phonetically...First time I heard we don't pronounce R's between a consonant and a vowel lol. How do we say tree?

It probably stems from just after the war of independence and the USAs subsequent quest to distance itself from the "motherland" - various things were done to change things like the changing of s in some words to z hence civilization/civilisation - or it could just be because of the wide range of accents in the U.S
