I read the Republic but was confused about what Plato's phiolosophies were on religion and God. Can someone clarify?

this kinda confused me also,

he advocates censoring any story that gives a bad image of the nature of the gods, portraying them as petty, devious, or warring and plotting and fighting against each other. The Gods, in Plato's eyes, should only be represented as good, because it is the nature of divinity to be good.

he also says how he thinks the universe was created, but he says that his story is just a that, a story, because we being mortals could never understand. He says that the creator, created the universe from his likeness, out of the preexisting chaos (this is different from the Christian view that God created the universe out of nothing)

as far as i know he never went into any specifics on religion. like whether or not gods actually existed.
but he thought that religion should act as a moral guidepost, and the gods portray an image of perfection.
basically that religion should teach people to be good and just from it's example.
oppossing the fact that stories of the gods from these days showed them as very human in their actions and emotions.
