There is no place for God in theories on the creation of the Universe, Professor Stephen Hawking has said.
He had previously argued belief in a creator was not incompatible with science but in a new book, he concludes the Big Bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.
The Grand Design, part serialised in the Times, says there is no need to invoke God to set the Universe going.
"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something," he concluded.

FYI this is in the physics and not the religion forum for a reason, by all means discuss the physics involved but please don't turn this into yet another "God did it" "No he didn't" argument.
Well fist off there is a bit of proof for spontaneous life generation.
The result of this proof seems to show that there is a conscious energy, the russians call it torsion fields, some scientists think it's red shift.
Anyways bacteria has been found in volcanoes, revived from ice after 10 million years, inside nuclear reactors.
Some black sea bacteria manage to photosynthesize in almost complete darkness. Some thrive on infrared light only, yet others thrive on radiation.
No proof to show they all originated from other living bacteria yet we act like there is no other explanation.
Could it be that there is an energy that creates life wherever it can?
Could it be that our own galaxy has a personality, and the personality of the galaxy has a template, in which all life emerges from an energetic background?
Life itself evolves from a field of energy and the field itself knows what it want's
Dr. francis crick one of the founding fathers of DNA even said that it is to complex to have evolved naturally.
The chance that it did is so astronomically high as to be several times what's needed to become a mathematical impossibility.
He said it would be like all the words in the whole encyclopedia of Britannica, falling randomly out of the sky and forming the encyclopedia as it is,out of random chance.
Another awesome discovery made by Dr. francis Crick what that he proved that 99.9% of space dust has the same light(spectrographic) signiture as living bacteria on earth.
Both humans and plants experience energetic changes in space.
The spiral of DNA has, as it's fundamental signature, all the basic aspects of the Fibonacci ratio or the "golden mean" as some know it.
Dr. James strick wrote a book with the Harvard university press called "sparks of life".
In the book he exposes a major scientific conspiracy in the 19th century.
Some were in favor of the Darwinian model of evolution.
Others argued for spontaneous generation of life from non living materials.
What happened is nothing was resolved scientifically and the proof for spontaneous life generation was squashed down in favor of the Darwinian model.
More recently professor Ignacio Ochoa Pacheco preformed an experiment that created results heavily in favor of spontaneous life generation.
Discovery's have show that creatures can spontaneously evolve to live in a new environment.
Dr. John Kearns showed how lactose intolerant bacteria could spontaneously develop the mouth parts needed to digest lactose when immersed in it.
Dr. Yu. V. Tszyan kanchzhen created a torsion generator as he calls it.
Which in laboratory experiments, showed that light shining on a duck egg, being funneled in another section to a chicken egg, would create a duck-chicken just from the light alone.
Out of 500 duck and chicken eggs zapped 480 hatched.
80% had a flat, duck-shaped head.
90% had a shift in the position of the eyes.
25% had webbing appear between toes.
Even evolutionary charts show that there is a dramatic, spontaneous evolution every 26 million years.
Evolutionary Scientists of Berkly university have found an even bigger, 62 million year cycle as well. It's called "cycles of extinction and biodiversity.
The cycle shows the start and sudden extinction of major types of life in the evolutionary chain going back 250 million years.
So with all the "random chance" involved how could there be these seemingly intelligent, constant cycles?
What the evidence suggests is that there are evenly spaced ripples of energy that "upgrade" life at predictable intervals.
Which is also shown in the work of Dr. Rosine Lallement who discovered that local interstellar medium clouds flow from the galactic center.
It's a scientific fact that human evolution is speeding up rapidly.
Dr. John Hawks, anthropologist from university of Wisconsin, he studied rapid evolution or what he called "positive selection".
He discovered that evolution for humans has sped up by 100x in the last 5000 years.
He discovered The last 40'000 years have been in general a time of supercharged evolutionary change in comparison to the whole evolutionary cycle before that.
He discovered that were more genetically different from people of 5000 years ago, then those people were compared to Neanderthal man millions of years ago.
The "flynn effect" is the real average increase in IQ by 3 points per decade in humans.
The change has been going on for the last 100 years as far as they can tell.
Iq tests are decreased by 3 every decade to keep the average the same.
The increase is most striking in tests that measure the ability to recognize abstract , non-verbal patterns.
Which means it's not a result of education or reading or the internet.
The study, done in over 20 countries, suggests that what were going through is tantamount to a cultural renaissance.
Well I got to get to bed so that it for now but I could write another page of this stuff.
