Anyone read this Anthony Burgess peice?

I found it grossly overrated. I managed to get the hang of the futuristic slang no problem. The world of violence he described really wasnt so far away from today. So in prophetic value he was spot on.

However i really didnt buy the whole brainwashing Alex thing. Forcing him to watch violence over and over until he was sick.

I feel this book is probably great for teenage boys who are on a violence kick in thier heads. Otherwise its entirely overrated.

Thats just my opinion though. Correct me if im wrong

Nope. No correction from this neck of the woods.
The movie still rocks though, I really like its visual style.

If you want violent behaviour you'd be better off reading "The Wasp Factory" or "American Psycho" for instance.

Oh I hated the film mostly

I think because most of it was filmed about a mile from where i live so it wasnt exacly magic in my eyes, not when you know there is a Tesco round the corner

that'd kill the magic right sharply I imagine.
I'm trying to visualise Clockwork Orange happening in my hometown now, and it's giving me the giggles I tell ya.

I my opinion, the brainwashing is the apex of the satire in the novel. It is the exact opposite of what would happen in "real-life"; aka: modern society.
Anyone who owns a television has been through the similar "Alex experience", but it does not make US sick.
If it did, considering we cannot escape it through television, news, etc, etc,......we would, as alex did, probably have the same outcome.

p.s. there are two different endings to the novel, which were released some years apart. The film version i believe has the original (censored) ending of the novel........the other version being well...

That was the "censored" version( i think that's hilarious in itself), but the real ending was Alex actually killing himself by jumping out of the window.
As far as i remember.....someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I just finished the book and I, personally loved it.

The writing style (All the slang) made it a challenge, but so much more
interesting to read. It really put you in the shoes of Alex through his
traumatic journey and not only did you sympathise for his feelings (or not for
that matter), you got his FEEL and view of life. Not just how he sees
things. You were inside his head, using his slang, hearing and understanding
things the way he did.

And in response to how you found the movie's far-fetched, it was the drugs
they gave him. They would make him sick as he watched the movies and
eventually that became stimulus response whenever he saw violence. He'd
been terribly sick every time violence had appeared and he believed it was the
violence doing it, not the drugs at all.

Still, all in all, one of the best books I've read.
