Avira or F-Secure, probably.

But I wouldn't bother paying.... especially if I was 15 and "paying" probably meant "pirating."

Get BitDefender v10 Free Edition (or Avira's free scanner, but be sure to find the registry edit to disable the popup ads) and Spybot Search & Destroy. Enable the Windows Firewall and forget about the rest.

I use Kaspersky, never had a problem, it doesn't take 99% of the CPU to run and it's cheap

So, if one didn't install ANY additional virus programs and only enabled the windows firewall...would she be totally stupid? My nephew told me not to enable the preloaded virus program, that the windows firewall is all I needed.

I don't even trust the windows firewall and use the one that came with AVG. Wow. Your nephew is dead wrong.

That would be akin to saying "your car has brakes, you don't need that seat belt or air bag."

I have spyware doctor and norton antivirus! but ever since I put spyware doctor on it stops everything until it has finished whatever it's doing, it's a CPU mugger!

now...kaspersky! that's something to look forward to then.

Not surprising to hear, his parents have spent an incredible amount of money on his IT education, yet it's difficult to have any confidence in what he does or tells me to. He's a bit of an airhead. In his defense the packaged virus program on my laptop was Norton. I think I'll look around and buy something today, and install it tonight. Thanks.

That's not a good plan either. It's actually one of the worst decisions you can make.

I strongly encourage you not to "look around and buy something today."

If he has AVG, don't bother changing it. Nothing out there will be significantly better for him.
