A TRAIN driver in New Zealand has held up road traffic twice this week while he stopped to get a pie for lunch, reports say.

Motorists were delayed for up to 20 minutes in the North Island city of Wanganui on Tuesday when a rail track barrier came down.

The delay occurred because the train driver had stopped the locomotive to get his lunch from The Big Bite bakery, the Wanganui Chronicle reported.

He is believed to have done the same thing the day before.

Lunchbar assistant Janine Hart told the paper she remembered the man coming in to buy his midday meal on Monday and Tuesday.

Asked what the driver bought, she said: "The pies, I think. They're lovely. Everything is home made."

A taxi passenger said her usual fare was doubled during the wait, while another motorist said the resulting traffic jam was a shambles.

"If a fire engine or ambulance wanted to get through it would have been a no show and this guy is getting his lunch, it's quite funny but it's not on," he told the paper.

Rail operator Toll New Zealand said it was investigating the incidents.

that is awful!! He should have set times for his lunch, as similar thing happened to me years ago, i was on a bus when the driver just pulled over and got out to get something from the shop and we were just sitting there not knowing what was going on, weather to get off the bus or stay seated, he just got out without saying a thing........

Service in that shop must be shocking when it took him 20 minutes to get served.

I am led to believe the driver knew the person in the pie shop very well, but they were having a chat in the store... hmm a bit arrogant my view on the drivers part.

Only 20 min? s***, we have trains that will block the intersection for hours at a time. I was stuck behind a train for an hour and a half before the f***ing thing moved.
