What is your school's policy on cursing and using foul language, and how well is it enforced?

The rules prohibit it, I think. I'm not sure though, and I don't feel like checking

My 9th grade bio teacher would freak at the smallest curse word. Someone would say "ass" and she'd tell them to watch their language. People would shut up without complaining though.

Other teachers are much more flexible with it. Especially English teachers, I find, probably since most of the books we read have some swear words in them. Some even curse themselves

But yeah. As far as clothing, movies, books, and verbally go... What is it like?

We weren't allowed too, but it was never enforced.

We had students swearing at teachers all the time. Not directly at them I mean, just in class. They weren't bothered by it.

Oh yeah, swearing *at* them would get you in biiiig trouble. Just cursing among friends usually is no big deal. It's funny how some teachers are so more tolerant of it than others, though.

At our school. Nobody cared. You could swear. But, just not at the teachers and staff. Even if you swore at them they just swore back at you.

Back in the stone ages when I went to school swearing was just not allowed at all. If a swear word was found in one of our books , the bood was boycotted from the school. Of course we all said the occasional swear words but we did'nt have the balls to do it in front of our teachers.

I do remember once when my history teacher let it slip I thought the whole class would die in laughter. I always made wonderful grades in history and it was my senoir year and I had not studied for this test and I made like a 20 something on it and when he handed me my paper he said Mickey "what the hell were you thinking?" LOL it was funny but we all knew he was a swearer out of school anyway.

I remember in 3rd grade my teacher told us we should focus more on pronouncing the word "ask" correctly because it sounded like ass. Except, she didn't want to say the word, so she wrote it on the board, and then spent like half an hour erasing it

That is funny Annski. But, why did she spend a whole half an hour erasing it. why not just erase it immediately.

I was exagerrating

Really all she did was scribble over it and then erase it. I guess she didn't want someone coming in and seeing she had written "ass" on the chalkboard.

At my school you are technically not supposed to use curse words. However, the teachers/administration aren't that good at enforcing that rule. One of my friends (boy, but not boyfriend) uses curse words all the time and it bugs me! He has never gotten in trouble though!

Me and practically nobody else at my school gives a s*** about any of their stupid rules. And, if they did start reinforcing, then, they'd have to make way more room for detention.

I am actually a high school teacher in the Midwest and we allow swearing by the students pretty much freely in the classroom as long as it's just "conversational." If it is used in a confrontational way, then that is a problem. But even then, it isn't the words themselves, but the INTENT of the words. Any racial slur will also bring punishment. But that is about all. In a typical class, for example, the phrase, "Damn! I studied my a** off for that test and I still f***ed up on it!" wouldn't receive the slightest punishment because it is conversational. But the phrase, directed at the teacher, "You f***ing a*****e! I studied my a** off for that test and you still gave me f***ing F!" would get punished because it is disrespectful and confrontational. There is a huge difference! I see absolutely nothing wrong with allowing the students to conversationally swear in school, including in the classroom. After all, they are just words. It is time that we grow up about language and stop living in the 1930's.

i went to a small school from grade 6 to 9. it was very liberal but i doubt any of the students would have sworn at the teachers in a confrontational way, i know i never did and i've always been very loose with the cursing.

then i came back to scotland to finish my high school education (loads of boring reasons) i could not believe how the teachers were spoken to. there was not a lot of swearing but there were implied threats.
