before today, how many of you knew of Georgia as something else that the state above Florida?

I knew where Georgia was but I admitt to knowing nothing about their political issues untill recent events.

my daughters name is Georgia, but i also knew it was a country below russia as well as an american state.

...would it be terribly misguided of me to think the adverage americans have a much lessened sense of world geography than other countries?

for a very long time on world maps russia and the eastern bloc was very much just one big lump i didnt say that too well. Like the political maps would just have it as the USSR and never divided.

None of the U.S. media I've seen have put any blame on Georgia. But I'm certainly not inclined to side with Russia. Putin is a power hungry maniac.

Yeah the US media always puts spins on stuff and is very select on what they show and say. It sucks. BBC USA is marketed by Discovery so even they are prob not as good as they were here.

07.08.2008 at 22:00 Georgia attacked South Ossetia, the troops rolled in.
At 3:30 08.08.2008 tanks of the Georgian armies have entered the city of Tskhinvali, the capital of the South Ossetian Republic.
Whole city was shelling by heavy artillery all day long, there were fights with use of tanks and heavy munition, which were used against both ossetic militia and non-combatants.

2000 civillians were killed during Georgian attack.

Russian peacemakers have arrived to South Ossetia in the evening of 08.08.2008 for settlement of the conflict and peace conduction in republic and protection of Russian citizens, living on territory of South Ossetia (approx. 80% of South Ossetian population).
Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on the opening day of 2008 Olympiad, it is top of cruelty and cynicism.

Well, according to most people, South Ossetia is part of Georgia. And yes, Russia did attack Georgia, regardless of the reason for it or whether you think it's justified or not.

What whas the cause of it?

The cause of it was Vladimir Putin. The justification for it is a bit sketchy as far as I've been able to gather. But presumably there was some sort of military action by Georgia against separatists within their own border.

You know I had no idea it was a country until I saw this covered on TV When I heard it on the radio, I thought that one American state had started some war with Russia
