when do most kids begin to talk?... my kids 1 yr 7 mon... so far he has said 'kitty' twice... other than that... he blabbers endlessly and expressively... we've had lots of conversations with him like that... he loves books... wants to be read to all the time... but he doesnt say much yet... other kids at his day are talking more now...

is this an issue?

they are pretty much all different, it helps if we dont respond so much to babble even though we know what the baby wants, for example if he says a baby word for wanting his drink ask him what he wants and reinforce the word "drink" when you give it to him.

Sorry if you already know this Dont fret over it though just keep talking to him and reinforcing words over and over and still if he doesnt improve have a chat with the health visitor.

wow... what the heck was that???

and also, i try not to talk back to him when he babbles... im bad at it though... its so freaking funny to me to have conversations with him... he just babbles with such expression, its like a real back and forth talk... im trying to resist though, and we do repeat words over and over...

im just kinda wondering the norm range though... he's my first, so i dont really know...

i wouldn't worry too much, its usually about 1yr and a half or so so he's not that late, my niece is close to 2 and she's exploded with her vocabulary only in the last 2 months or so.

A first baby will take a little longer than siblings because they dont have a brother or sister to imitate. I suspect it will all click in place before he is 2.

"By around 14 to 20 months of age, a child will usually speak actual words. They begin with simple words that they have heard often, such as ?mama? or ?dada.? These words eventually turn into two-word phrases, which is the next step on the journey of speech. Two-word phrases such as ?come baby? or ?doggie gone? begin around the age of 2 years. By this point, a baby should have around 50 words in her vocabulary."

sounds like he is on schedule to me

Kids all develop their verbal language at different times, I wouldn't worry too much about his use of language at this stage but the understanding of it, does he under simple langange? ie, 'wheres the cat' or 'wave bye bye' if you are worried, speak to your health visitor but from my experience and knowledge, once the first few words start flowing, there's gonna be an explosion of vocabulary!
Then you wont be able to shut him up

Make sure you get some film of him and write in his baby book what his funny words are. Children are always fascinated to know what they were like as babies.
