The definition I remember is the capacity to do work.

Clarification: what is energy in pysics

what is work? (in physics)

Why are you asking these questions here instead of consulting a dictionary?

Work is the action of force over a distance.

Energy can be neither created nor destroyed.

Energy is the capacity to do work.

Work is the action of force over a distance.

Energy is the capacity to do action of force over a distance.

Force is a push or a pull. F=ma the product of mass and acceleration.

E = (m)(a)/distance

m = [E/(c)(c)] [a]

Energy is the ability to push or pull a mass over a distance.

Acceleration is a change in velocity of a mass.

Velocity is speed in a direction.

Speed is distance per time.

Energy is the ability to change the direction, and or distance per time of a mass.

Energy is an ability.
I am not trying to make a point. I am trying to understand what energy is. Mathematics is the language of physics. I am trying to translate it into words. I still do not understand what energy is.

E = MC^2 i.e. energy is the product of mass and the speed of light squared.

Energy is a relationship between mass, distance, time, and direction.

Mass is a form of energy M = E/(c)(c) i.e. energy per a constant squared.

Any ideas?

Any ideas about what? You just gave a laundry list of vaguely-connected ideas about physics. No questions, nothing. What do you want to know?

Mass is a form of energy M = E/(c)(c) i.e. energy per a constant squared.

so the greater the energy the greater the mass i.e. energy and mass are directly propotional.

mass is condenced energy

energy is reified mass

does that make sense?

Energy is something that I have very little of most days and that which I do have has been supplied by coffee.

I can't tell whether you are trying to learn about physics, bouncing philosophical ideas off us, or trying to start an argument. I have no idea how to respond to you.

If you are making a list, you could add

engery = voltage x current x time

Actually, effectively in modern physics energy applies to the capacity to effect change - not just 'mechanical work over a distance'. Otherwise energy would be hard to apply to certain quantum formalaic circumstances. Or so I'm told.
