John Reid is set to make a statement to MPs on prisons today amid fears that Britain's jails are set to reach maximum capacity within days.

The home secretary is to make a Commons statement on the crisis as the population behind bars approaches its 80,000.

Reid is thought to be considering the activation of 'Operation safeguard', which would see police cells used to hold inmates.

Another option would see some prisoners moved to open jails, although this would not apply to the most serious offenders.

However the home secretary is thought to be opposed to a more general early release scheme, fearing it would undermine confidence in the criminal justice system.

Plans have been announced to create another 8,000 prison places, but they will not be available to deal with the current crisis.

So whos up for commiting a serious crime?? cause i dont think we'll go to prison!! there all full..

lol i had to laugh when that senior judge said he'd done one days community service and so he could see it was a decent alternative to prison - what a joke.

Ye i agree...

But think of it, how is crime and punishment going to sort out sentences now?? the extra 8,000 places will be full in a year! we should do what they did in a movie i saw, where they had an island and the just dropped them off there and forgot about them..

when i was a community service officer, supervisors were regularly asked to drive a van with 15 offenders to a job on their own. then they would be great suprise the vans were always coming back vandalised and that most supervisors either quit or basically let the offenders do what they wanted.

The Australian solution is funny because that's what was done in the past to
clean out the prisons.

it's funny to think about because all native australians have convicts as ancestors in common. It was an interesting social experiment.

There isnt one.. at the moment. they want to fill up police stations with prisoners.. but what about the crime that people commit and have to be restrained.. house arrest maybe another option... but all in all... there is no solution.. at the moment..

Create a suitable deterrent to stop people offending in the first place or send them all to the army, if you commit a petty crime, its 2 years in the armed service of your choice, catch them young [16ish] before they turn into seasoned criminals with wasted lives and you will save a fortune on the prison systems.

What is more worrying is that they plan on letting a lot of these criminals out early and tagging them but i don't see tagging working, hell they are even commit murders while tagged, so its just not a suitable idea
