The only legal way to do it is to call Dell and get the proper Dell restore CD sent to you.

Can you not download Windows Media Player from the internet?

You don't necessarily have to Download Microsoft Word, when I got my computer I had a disk come with it that has the whole of Microsoft Office on it, maybe you could have a look around for that as an alternative?

Dell will send you one.

They might charge a fee.

But they will send one. You need to call and ask them for it.

Use OpenOffice instead of Word. You can download it for free and it will open Word documents.

Nah, unfortunately, they're still working on compatibility. It seems especially bad with Powerpoint.

Excel is pretty OK, and Word is pretty OK. We tried it in my office out of curiosity a couple of months ago, and we have tons of documents that are totally broken in OpenOffice. Almost anything with a lot of formatting on it doesn't work quite right. For most people and most simple documents, OpenOffice is a great alternative, especially if you don't own Office.. but if you have Office already, it's definitely worth trying to get it back.
