Animal rescuers go bananas to save Chinese panda

On Tuesday, animal rescuers from a village in southwest China spent hours trying to coax a giant panda off of a 50-meter- high cliff. Luckily, the promise of a tasty treat was enough to lure the panda to safety.

Villagers from the small town of E'bian County, in the Sichuan province, spotted the bear early on Friday. When the scared animal remained stranded over the weekend, community members, frightened to get too close to the rare species, called on wildlife experts, CBS affiliate Channel 9 reports.

One worker told the news source, "The panda is China's national treasure. Nobody dared to touch it."

After spending about seven hours trying to secure the giant creature, a single banana proved to be the too tempting for the panda to resist.

Eventually, the animal, estimated to be about 3 or 4 years old, was lured to safety and was able to climb off of the mountain.

The creatures is an endangered species, as there are only about 1,600 pandas live in the wild, mostly concentrated in Sichuan. About 120 more are being held in Chinese zoos and animal rescue breeding centers and 20 populate zoos abroad.

I discovered this story when I clicked the link in my sig. It was just too cute to NOT post. I knew they were endangered but I thought there were many more of them out there.

I heard this on the news last friday and they said the exact same thing "i thought pandas liked bamboo"

I wonder if he does it again for another banana.

I thought it was only gorillas you could coax with a banana!

That would be so cute! I really thought they just ate bamboo and maybe other greenery. ??? Maybe I should find out what else they eat. I feel especially ignorant because Pandas are my favorite bears.

My son and I may have watched a couple episodes on TV. I believe Care Bears came to be long before he was born, though.

Maybe I should have stayed on TFS as PaNda although I am still the same person. My indecisive behavior drives ME to distraction. I put that on my profile so I won't have to feel like such an idiot.

I would love to see a Panda bear up close, and possibly pet one, before I pass on.

My son always thinks of me when he sees Pandas. He bought me a little garment pin at a yard sale that I keep on my bedside table.

Around 22 years ago, I bought some rose perfume just so I could get the mauve and white Panda bear holding a rose. He's called Tea Rose Peter Panda and I still have him.

What I really think is quite unique about Pandas is that they normally have only one baby at a time. It's sad when they have two because they cant care for more than one.

I have only one baby. He's my angel.
