I heard something about this on the radio yesterday, so i looked it up.

The Government will consider scrapping the blasphemy laws after consultation with the Church of England, Downing Street said.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman said ministers may table amendments to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill in the House of Lords.

MPs are due to debate the measure in the Commons on Wednesday and Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris has tabled his own amendment to scrap the ancient law designed to protect Christianity and the Church of England from attack.

Seems to make sense scrapping old laws that are past their sell by date. Particularly after the hullaballoo over 'Mohammed the Teddy Bear'. I was vaugley aware that this law still existed but from the link you can see just how long it's been since anyone was prosecuted by it. Although, not that long ago, it was seen as a very serious offence. Times change and so do our attitudes towards what causes unacceptable offence. Dare I say the sensibilities of other religions may like to take note!

Reminds me of the programme on New Years Eve about the Monty Python film 'Life of Brian' and how much fuss was made at the time, or more recently 'Satanic Verses' by Salman Rushdie, or even more recently 'those' cartoons.

They're simply being replaced by the assorted incitement to hatred laws.
