This was brought up in another thread so I thought I would make a new topic.

I think it's the same concept as kids. Don't send the child to their room where they have all their toys, and their TV, and all their luxuries, send them to the corner.

Time out is not meant to be fun.
Neither is jail.

Here are some examples of prisons that, in my opinion, are more like Hotel Hilton than a prison:

Top 10 Luxury Prisons:

Some good pics:

Now I'm not saying that should be sleeping on cement and eating glass and stone, but come on! I've stayed in hotels not nearly as nice as these prisons!

Are prisons meant to punish or rehabilitate?

If you ask me, they need to bring back more public humiliation as a punishment.

Tie someone up in the town square and throw rotten vegetables and dog s*** at them.

Strip the toys from the prisons. Also, make judges liable for repeat offenders they let off.
You will find violent crime drop dramatically.

That might be more of a deterrent then.

However, I'm pretty sure the Constitution would identify that as cruel and unusual punishment.

I definitely think we should go back to stone floors, metal toilets, and solid, black steel bars.

None of this DVD, cable TV, mini fridge BS in cells.

Well, it's unusual because nobody does it. And I don't see how it's more cruel than, say, the death penalty which the consitution allows.

Stone floors? no way, too expensive! Maybe concrete, or dirt.

I think that depends on the mental state of the criminal and the crime that was committed.

I think people more in need of rehabilitation should be in a place that is not as uncomfortable as a standard jail but there is no need for TVs everywhere, pool tables and that sort of thing.

If it has been determined to be punishment then year bare bones. Of course they are gonna be nicer now then like 30 years ago but there has to be some discomfort.

That's why a lot of people repeat crimes! They don't want to go back into the outside world!
Why would you want to leave somewhere that you don't have to pay for, you get good food, a warm bed, and decent entertainment? Sounds like home!
