It's more productive than executing everyone who commits a crime, no?

That would depend on the crime.

Yes for serious crimes..no for stealing a bag of penny sweets.

And what's your line on 'serious' crime?

I disagree with people being handed over the top sentences just to be made an example of.

It's not over the top.
We have guidelines and rules about what punishments people get, and it is meant to take into account the circumstances of that crime. Just because it's usually more lenient doesn't mean it's wrong when a judge decides to use a longer sentence.

I think Singapore has a good spin on things.
Misdemeanor Crimes should result in a public flogging.
Felony Crimes should result in a public hanging.

I don't believe in prisons.
Local Holding Cells whilst the convicted await their flogging or hanging would be necessary...but jail as punishment, no.

Compared to a bag of penny sweets, how much value is there in the 'pair' of two left trainers?

People getting 4 years for posting a message on facebook/twitter.

People who have never had a previous conviction being locked up for theft of small items.Yes judges can take into account the circumstances and this is obviously the case here for them to abuse their power and hand out ridiculous sentences.

I don't see your point.

My penny sweets comment was just an example.

I've been thinking about this and lets say the riots had started off through a protest about anti-capitalism or against the banks or the 1% or even the student loans,I wonder if as many people would still be backing these kind of sentences.
