well, this topic is in "sociology" so I'll give you my ideas. . . . as a sociology student and future sociologist .

Your identity is shaped by the community and society you live in, the culture of that society and your family's culture, your gender, race and ethnicity, current issues in society, your parents socio-economic status, their own beliefs and ideas. . . .in short, just about everything around you or that happens to you shapes your identity.

oh ok cool thanks...i also have other instututions such as peer pressure as well as secoundary sociolization such as eucation, mass media work government and so on...

institutions? well, in sociological terms, the family itself is an institution. as is education, the government and the media. i think these all play a part in national identity. look at education, for example. the history that is taught is predominantly european history, the values that are taught and the customs that are used on a daily basis are ones that have been used in britsin for centuries. the conflict comes when you get people from another country or another culture. how do you accommodate them? (rhetorical question)

I'm not really sure. . . .I'd say the family and the education sector both play very important roles. people generally adopt their families beliefs and views, and then education tends to reinforce most of them.

I was going to say something else, but now I've forgotten Hopefully it will come back to me!

Ok..Here we go..

Sociology, and its perspective, views individuals as "blank slates" at birth. We are socialized by institutions (such as the family, education, even government) into normative behaviors and actions. Sociology views external effects (nurture), as opposed to internal effects (nature) such as biology as the main shaper of identity.
