Everything else aside, Forrest was a great leader of fighting men.

Where are you getting this? The article you posted says he didn't want to denounce some 1 that lived 100 years ago. While I disagree and see plenty to denounce Forrest for, I can nonetheless see his point. What the article DOESN'T say is anything about him calling Forrest his hero.

I didn't link the one article I read the other night about his statement saying forrest was one of his "hero's"....but right now I can't find it. Sorry. I have a problem with ANY elected official singing the praises of someone who killed folks who where AGAINST slavery and ALL that slavery represented!

Forrest didn't co-found the KKK until after the Civil War (I don't know why, but for some reason all your links seem to be giving Forrest a smaller role than he really had). The point wasn't to kill any who were against slavery and all that represented, but to keep Blacks "in their place" and get rid of any who disagreed with that. That might not be much of a distinction, but it's important to keep things straight here.

Regardless, if you can't find the link saying he called Forrest a hero then I'll look for it myself. I'm sorry, I know you mean well, but I'm not just going to take your word for it. Especially since pledging to veto such a bill goes counter to what you claim he said.

This is the closest I could find.

https://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/02/16/haley-barbour-sidesteps-furor-over-kkk-linked-license-plate-in-m/

The part in question is this quote, "He's a historical figure." That's about as neutral as you can possibly get (and vague too, but that wasn't your problem). Of COURSE he's a historical figure. So's Abraham Lincoln and Joseph Stalin. The thing it doesn't say is if he's a GOOD or BAD historical figure. I also have a question for you. If he's so obviously racist, why would the NAACP of Mississippi even bother trying to get him on their side? It seems their energy could've been put to better use if he's such a lost cause.

Having said that, my search has gotten me thinking. The Governor's position seems to be "stay neutral and let the whole thing blow over." That would work if he was anything other than the Governor of Mississippi, but with a scandal like this he really should involve himself. The NAACP already asked him to, and from their actions it looks like the Sons of Confederate Veterans wants him to as well. With that in mind he really should, yet it seems like he doesn't know how to. If he can't even handle a relatively easy problem like this within his own state, how would he handle tougher problems as President? I don't know if he'll really run for President, but if he does I'm convinced I won't vote for him in the primaries.

Can't answer that seeing has how I don't know much about the NAACP! I'am an American who is more an activist for the ADVANCEMENT OF ALL PEOPLE!

Whatever! But let me add this: the FACT that he "co-founded" the American terrorist organization or had anything to do with them in the first place...should be reason enough for ANY decent human being to "put this terrorist in his place!" And his place in history, IMO will forever be stained with his disgusting actions! And what do you mean by "get rid of?" Sounds like KILLING to me! But perhaps you could explain.....I think I have things "straight" when it comes to the basic HUMAN RIGHTS given by God to ALL people!

My point wasn't to justify but to clarify. Yes, "get rid of" usually meant killing, but it could also mean "run out of town" (both of which were used against "Carpetbaggers" and "Scalawags" ). I'm not disagreeing with you here. Yes the KKK was bad, and destroying it was about the only good thing Grant did as President (though of all the good things to be remembered for, that's pretty far up there). No Forrest doesn't deserve a license plate, and according to the sources Barbour doesn't even think it'll get past Congress. Really, it looks like the vast majority of Mississippians are against the idea anyways.

I didn't mean to imply you personally know what the NAACP thinks, either in Mississippi or Illinois. I just meant that, if he really is such a racist who loves Forrest, then why would the organization even bother trying to get him on their side? Either Barbour isn't as big a fan of Forrest and isn't as big a racist as you think, or the Mississippi branch is incompetent. Frankly, I'm leaning towards the 1st option.
