I've never quite understood the family obsession at Christmas time personally.

Neither have I, aside from little traditions that I used to have with my grandparents.

After about half an hour in the company of my family I usually want to throw sharp objects in their direction

as you have fond memories of Christmas with your grandparents, if you dont carry on those traditions, they die out!
We are the first to blame other cultures for our dying traditions, but its up to us to keep them alive so our own children and grandchildren will follow and enjoy Christmas as we did.

Same to me it is just any other day but with a fancy tree, good food and presents

Some people don't have anyone to spend Christmas day with at all and I kinda think Kristy you should at least be thankful for that rather than getting all angry about not having people around on Christmas Eve. It's not that pathetic...

Is it wrong of me to be pissed my parents don't want to be with their daughter on Christmas Eve but with a friend that my mom (and I) doesn't even know?

HELLO!
It's Christmas. Family time. Kristy time. NOT Marcus time.
This means you stay home and watch Christmas movies and bake with me!

Why not during the DAY Christmas eve? Why at night?
I only want them around 3 days out of the year;
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and my birthday.
The other 362 days I don't give a crap what they do!

I'm about to have a little chat with my father about this retarded insolence...

Have a chat with your parents, though i expect if they have already made arrangements, you may not be able to change their mind about going out.
Its not your dads friends fault that your parents are going out.
Their friend is not responsible for how your feeling and your parents have made the choice to spend time in his company. So, its your parents fault not their friends.
Can you not arrange to do something with a mate or something so that you too can have some fun instead of sitting in alone moping and wondering what your parents are up to.
It could be worse, some parents for some reason or another wont even be spending Christmas day with their kids.
Your getting a "big girl" now and will have to start being independant from your parents and make your own plans.
They would have spent many Christmas eves with you...so dont try to deny them the night out!

I agree.
There,s nothing about it not to like, as its what you make it to be.
For many its a time when family members get together who they dont see so much of during the year due to work commitments etc.
There is enough doom and gloom around so any excuse for a celebration is good!

I know how you feel, my dad wouldn't even spend christmas day with us last year as he wanted to spend it alone with his gf, me and my sis went along to my aunt and uncle who were kind enough to welcome us otherwise we would've been alone! But for some stupid radon I feel guilty this year that I am not able to see him til boxing day as I am living 3 hours away and finally able to spend it with my other half ?! Christmas us just one big load of family politics!

If they're going out, they're not driving me anywhere. Plus, my friends are all family people. So naturally they're spending time with their families.
No one else I know is partying Christmas Eve.

And I don't want to party.
I want to spend time with my parents.

I can understand your wanting to keep tradition alive. At least for this one last year according to what you have just said about your last year being a minor.
Why not tell them how you feel about it, sicne there is still time? Or at least they can compromise, and go to their friends house later in the evening?

My mom refuses to talk about it.
So I'm taking matters into my own hands and talking to my dad.

I don't understand why she's being such a Grinch.
She's ALWAYS like this around the holidays.
