OK I'm pretty oblivious to news and current events, I don't read papers or watch TV and I forget to check the Firefox news feed.

So can someone explain to me, simply, why is petrol so expensive, and why does it keep going up?

Answers like "cause the government are f***ers" don't really help by the way.

Thanks

well in the UK we pay a huge amount of tax on petrol and oil prices are high because of the war - thats about all i know.

Basically because the cost of oil is rising. As I'm sure you're aware oil is a non renewable energy source and in my mind (which may well be wrong) because we're running out of it the price gets more expensive (the more people demand it makes the supply smaller making it more expensive).

my idea on it,

Because the middle east want even more money so they put the price of oil up, and then it takes more monkey to run the ships that transport it.

And then, government take loads of tax on it, so that adds more money to the price...

And also, the government increase tax occasionally to deter people from using their cars so much (global warming)

And if you live nearer / in a city the prices go up, because there's more people and less stations and so they can afford to.

I might be wrong, that's just what I've gathered.

They have however deferred a 2pence tax rise on petrol, or i think the 2nd budget.

Yea, I heard that too. I've also heard that some supermarkets are now bringing down the price of petrol in order to compete against each other.

Actually if there is an urbanised areas with a lot of petrol stations it drives the price down, because there is more competition, and people have a larger choice. As far as customer loyalty is concerned petrol stations don't have it, even a penny will make customers choice a different station.

Theres actually talk of a petrol price war about to start so we may be looking forward to slightly cheaper petrol for a little bit. I know one station around here is 114.9p for a litre!
