interesting leon ... i saw the first ali frazier fight ... was amazing ..the foreman ali fight was featured last week .. and as a kid i was sure that ali was going to be slaughtered and was distraught when he knocked out the invincible george .... watching it now it's obvious to see that ali was an absolute genius in the ring ... i saw ken norton fight him and at the time everyone agreed that norton won ...but ali got the decision ...that fight is featured next week ... did you not rate the young mike tyson leon ?
I saw Mike extensively in his early fights, when they were featuring them almost monthly on boxing shows, leading up to his championship fights and Michael Spinks. Iron Mike had one devastating weapon, which was his punch of course, as nobody had quite a knockout punch like his since George Foreman was in his heyday. The problem with Mike, though, is that he didn't really have much else well developed in skill or training (his original trainer died when he was young). When watching his early fights, he would just hunch himself up and edge towards his opponent, constantly putting up his arms or hugging his opponent, waiting for the right moment, and then, BAM, it would be over. Problem with that, though, was that, while it worked against lesser opponents and even guys like Spinks, who was a converted light heavyweight, once he faced guys who had the stamina to withstand his punches, like Evander Holyfield, who was extensively trained for just that, then he became easy to beat. He would never have done well against dancers like Ali and his contemporaries or Larry Holmes (in his prime) or guys with a chin like Marciano, or even punchers who were simply taller than he was and could outreach him/avoid his punches. And his record shows that, as he never really beat anybody worth mentioning.
