I need help, I'm getting 4mb broadband through a modem from NTL so that I can connect another pc. I have been told to get a wireless DSL router that's compatible but there are so many out there.
Can anyone help me find out which one I need?

Any DSL router will work - any hald decent place will tell you if its suitable for either Cable or Non-cable.

?30 should do you though - if you want a recommendation, let me know

Does both pc's have wireless network cards? if not then a wireless router won't help any. If you are hardwiring them into the router, via a crossover cable then a normal router will suffice and will be cheaper too

Ok right I'm stumped again, no one told me I needed network cards, I don't know if they have or haven't :
I wanted one of them upstairs for my 12 year old to do his homework without disturbing me.
Therefore I need the wireless, so do I also need these cards?

Go to ebuyer.co.uk, and type in quickcode 66004

Don't forget, you'll also need a wireless network card - circa ?8

You dont 'need' wireless - I've put access points in all the rooms in my house using cables.

Plus, using a cable will be easier to restrict their use if you need to

I need to know 3 things:

1. How far is it from the modem to your PC?
2. How far is it from the modem to your sons PC?
3. How long is the cable from the modem to the wall box?

The modem isn't being installed til Thursday.
So what you are saying is I don't need to go wireless?

You only need to go wireless if the 2 PCs are more than about 100 metres from each other, as the signal then starts to fade.

Wireless would prevent that.

If NTL are as good as Telewest, they should be able to put the modem where you want it, so try and get it in a central place.

Are both your and your sons PC, or is one (or both) a laptop?

They're both desk tops. His room is right above the living room though.

OK - for a wireless setup, you will need the wireless router, and 2 wireless network cards.

For a non wireless setup, a standard router (?15) and 2 long Cat5 cables will do - Cat5 cost about ?1 per metre.

The only drawback to using cables, iif you don't want cables along the floor, is that you will need to lift the carpet up at the sides and slip them under.

On the plus side, a wired network is a lot more secure than wireless.

At the end of the day, it's personal choice - but I know this last comment didn't help you

Cheers for all the help Steve. Yeah you're right the bit about security meant absolutely nothing.
