Quote:
A federal judge sided with the ACLU in a recent case, stating that it was wrong for a high school principal to punish two girls for posting "racy" pictures on Facebook, according to Gawker. Apparently the school official suspended the girls from all extracurricular activities for a year after someone informed him of the photos.

The judge ruled in favor of the girls, stating that their punishment violated their First Amendment rights. Because the photos were taken and distributed outside of the school the principal was out of line in handing down a punishment.

The only thing I have to say is: Where the hell are the parents to think this is appropriate at 15 and 16, and further to take it to court?

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you your next generation of porn actresses.

Though I do agree that it's not the school's place to punish them for it.

It's not something that should be dealt with by the school AT ALL. However, the matter itself receives a "facepalm" rating from me

If what ever the girls wanted to do after school lets say softball and the team has a code of conduct then the judge was wrong if they have no code of conduct then the school was wrong.

I think the parents were looking for a "payday".

There is nothing to indicate the parents were okay with their children acting in such a manner. It only says they were not okay with the school's reaction to it. The latter doesn't necessarily mean the former.

The title of the thread and article is misleading. The judge didn't uphold the girls' rights to publish lewd photos online, the judge denied the school the right to punish them for doing something unrelated and outside of school. If the photos were distributed IN school, then I'm guessing the story would be totally different. On a different note, that Christina Hartman is one hot little number.

A school has no business whatsoever punishing children for what they do while they're away from school.

Is this the same as a big five? Or air blown non contact kisses where a simple hand shake would, or might, do better?

If school children are away from school but in uniform then what they're doing will reflect on the school, for good or bad. So in that respect the school can have legitimate concerns and should be able to make a considered and proportionate response.

exactly. That's what I was thinking as well. Had it been my daughter she would lose all of her privileges, fb included, for a very very long time, but the SCHOOL would NOT be deciding that and I very well would have taken them to court. They can discipline my children while my children are in their care. I will discipline them while in my care. I do not need the school parenting my children for me, and while I am a long ways from being a slippery slope seer, this is one case where I definitely do see a slippery slope effect.

From the last sentence of the article...

Quote:
the judge states that the photos also did not interfere with the school, and were thus harmless to the educational institution.

Nowhere in any of it did it state that uniforms were involved. In fact, it said "pajamas and lingerie".
