Wow, Jorie. I've been looking for a while for a picture that shows what the one in this article does...a side-by-side of before and after.

The National Guard should be there about now and they're allowing 60 civilian volunteers to help on the Darrington side of the slide.

I did see on the news this morning that they'd found a dog buried alive in one of the homes. And by that, I mean they found the dog alive. He shook the mud off his coat and walked away on his own.

I take that as a sign of hope. There could still be people alive in there and I pray they have the strength and courage to hold on. It is a difficult rescue/recovery attempt and there is more rain coming.

Yeah, I've been kind of following this as well. I remember thinking in the middle of this rainy season, that we would probably see a lot of this, but I never thought of everything that might come with. It's horrifying!
They are saying they have enough volunteers right now, and they are sticking with locals, who know the area well. Logical, as the area is still so dangerous as it is.

I live in a similar geographical area. Fortunately, we're far enough away from the actual mountain side that I don't have to worry about this wiping out my home. There are some people who have made their little gypsy-like camps right up against the mountainside - which has frequent small slides almost every year - and I really hope they re-think their position after this.

I just saw on Facebook that the Arlington Domino's is donating 100% of their profits from this Thursday to the victim relief fund.

Yeah, I just watched the breaking news about the latest.

FEMA is involved/approved now - a FEMA team on it's way.
National Guard will be there this afternoon also.

Arlington officials are saying they have/had/do more
than adequately warn homeowners about this very possibility.
And they are saying they did discover:

"A 1point something earthquake happened nearby within the
last couple weeks, so that may of had something to do with it."

My husband had wondered that exact thing. Amazing. If it had been a slightly bigger earthquake, that same thing may have happened in my community...at the same time.

Yikes! I'm so glad it didn't!!

I do wonder when I see houses/community built on hillsides, bluffs
about the safety of it. They do accept/carry some of the
responsibility ---- like choosing to live near an airport or
a military base and then complaining about the noises?!!!

Waaaat da?

Watching the news

49 structures?

I gather that's not just houses?
Structure could be: sheds, separate garages/shops, whatever

More bodies today, 2 for sure identified.

16 fatalities known.

Believe 8 bodies located today, but not
recovered/retrieved yet.

And even as the spokespersons are giving these details specifically,
the news channel has this scrolling on the bottom: "24 dead in mudslide".

*********49 structures, and 176 people unaccounted for?

When the news was covering the very beginning of this slide they mentioned quite a few people stayed in motor homes or travel trailers. There's a community near Index like that. Some people stay there year round and others just to vacation.

My thoughts to those who suffered human losses. Houses and roads can be rebuilt. Natural disasters will occur as the world keeps turning and blah blah blah.

New developments in these type of areas should be built with this type of disaster in mind.
Hopefully they find many safe & sound.
