OK, maybe a 35 year-old story isn't current events ... that's when Kilauea started erupting.
By January 2000 it had produced 1.9 km3of lava, covered 102 km2 of landscape, and added 205 hectares to Kilauea's southern shore.
More Info Here
FYI: Not a news site.

Anyway, here's the current update:

I was talking to a work colleague about this today. Apparently this is one of the world's most active volcanoes. How the heck is this the first we are hearing about this? Last 10 year years any mention of volcanoes has been Iceland and ash clouds. Maybe it's just because it wouldn't normally affect us here in the Uk

It hasn't been as "fantastic" as it has been lately. Just more of a slow ooze here and there. Not news worthy.

... thinking about it, i believe it has shown up in some of those "nature/science" shows.

I remember one explaining the "hot spots" and that is how Hawaii was formed - and with continental drift, you have the chain of islands with the oldest to the west, and newest to the east.

.. a hot-spot, just like Yellowstone ...

Yes Kilauea's been active for a long time, and until recently it showed no signs that it would flow the way it is now. You used to even be able to take tours to see exposed lave tubes as they flowed towards the ocean. Then it started flowing towards residential areas and power plants. Every so often you'd hear a story of how a lava flow covered a stretch of road or near or on a house, but nothing like this. I've never heard talk of evacuating entire sub-divisions before.

(At least that's what I thought but apparently a lava flow basically destroyed a majority of an entire town in 1990, a year before I was born)

well, the last time the Icelandic volcanoes did seriously erupt ( few hundred years ago ) it caused the uk great hardship. crops failed because the summer sun was muted and the temperature was affected.

Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010 and caused a lot of problems ( "enormous disruption...across western and northern" ) with air travel to/from Europe.

Volcanoes in Iceland have been erupting on a regular basis since (at least) 1902.

My favorites are Hekla (one of the 7 gates to Hell) and Surtsey.

well, I was in the uk in 2011 and the eruption had no effect at all on everyday life unless you were flying... and I don't fly...the Icelandic volcanoes are known to have been erupting on a very regular basis since 900 ad ..and the one that had the greatest effect on northern Europe was the Laki eruption of 1783 ... it created an acid fog that descended on northern Europe ,which caused illness and death due to breathing sulphur fumes and crop destruction. apparently there are about 160 volcanoes on Iceland. I wouldn't like to live there.

2010 not 2011.

And just because your particular life wasn't effected doesn't mean that it didn't have a major impact many people in Europe.

Now I feel like watching The Magic School Bus again, specifically the one where they show how islands are made.

Piss is not the first thing that comes to mind with volcanoes, but I get your drift.

Watching the lava fountains and hearing the coqui was weird. I didn’t realize the PR frogs had went to Hawaii.
