I think a person is really more what they think of themself as than what is on the outside. Especially in cases of people whose chromosomes don't match their external characteristics, such as those with androgyn insensitivity. If you believe yourself to be a certain gender, then for all it matters that is the gender you are.

There are actually cases where babies are born with both a female and male reproductive organs. It's thought that this is origanlly where transgenders came from. Usually the baby is operated on as soon as born, and the parents and the doctors decided if the baby should be male of female depending on how much of which hormone it has, and which reproductive organ is fully functional, and normal size. I believe (I could be wrong), that it use to be that they were made female, not matter what because it was simpler in the past. Also this childern have to take hormone pills for the rest of their lives so that they stay male or female and don't "regress" back into this "genderless" being they were when they were born.
But if you think about, perhaps they were just more like God? Baring both male and female together?
