In my opinion, the Earth without the moon, would be an unrecognizable world, it would look like the world of Hades, collisions with asteroids would be more frequent, the sun only taking care of the Earth would destroy it all. Now, that's a scientific point of view, you're free to add religious stuff as well.
‘The Science Channel’ did a documentary on the subject last week. The thesis is that a planet named ‘Orpheus’, that orbited the sun between Earth and Mars, got to close and collided with the earth causing the wobble that results in the change of seasons. Without the wobble (seasons) there could be no life on Earth. The debris from the collision circled the Earth and agglutinated into what is now the Moon. Without the Moon there could be no life on earth. I did not record the program and I am not very good at remembering so I cannot give specifics. But it introduces another factor for life on other planets. For life to exist, the planet would not only have to be Earth like but also wobble and have a Moon.
