I have spoken to some conservatives in the past who say "America got to the moon before Soviet Russia, therefore capitalism is better than socialism." Actually America sent people to the moon through NASA and NASA is a taxpayer-funded government organization, therefore the space race was between government intervention and government intervention.

I don't think we should ever go to Mars because that would be a waste of money but if we do go to Mars then we'll need government intervention.

I watched total recall the other night. It would be cool if aliens did work out how to make an atmosphere we could live in on Mars. Like Earth but bigger.

Sooner or later we are gunna run out of space and resources on this planet. So we either move and and find away to live below the sea. Or we get into space.

NASA is funded through taxation of a capitalist economy and, in return, that money is used to utilize private companies like General Dynamics in building their technologies. So capitalism still had its hand in sending people to the moon.

Soviet Russia, in contrast, bankrupted their base via forced collectivization in getting the money for their space program. It couldn't last. And didn't.

Life continues to reproduce and adapt to survive. Our solar system will not last forever. At some point we will need to leave this solar system if we wish to survive. This will be an incredible daunting task that will require continually pushing the boundaries of our technology.

A manned mission to Mars is the next baby step in a long journey if we intend on continuing our existence beyond the lifespan of the Sun.

well.... there seems to be evidence that Europa might have a liquid ocean under all that ice. and the chances that there is life there is greater than any other place in our solar system. and yeah it might not be life as we know it.

A liquid ocean is not all we need for life. A liquid ocean under a massive planet-wide sheet of ice can easily be considered "inhospitable to life" when we are discussing the possibilities for human life on that moon.

As far as the chances being greater there than anywhere else in the universe, that is like saying Mitt Romney has the greatest chance of not being a lunatic out of all the Republican candidates. It doesn't mean he is not crazy, it just means he is the only one we have any hope of seeing even a glimmer of "normal" out of.

Europa is not terribly hospitable to life, but compared to the other contenders in our solar system it does have some of the highest chances.
