I think what sister of mercy said about how applicable the quotes are depends much upon there context is spot on, though personally I think the second does have a more universal application than the first.

"Hell is other people"...........there is a Buddhist text that has the Buddha moving down into the deepest hells carrying a lamp. By the light of the lamp those who have been locked within their hell are heard to say...."Ah, there are others here beside myself." In this context, "other people", and the recognition of them, is the beginning of breaking out of "hell". Until a recognition like this, in such a context, our ego's can remain locked into themselves, self sufficient, and the "beliefs" of others only a threat to our own securities and self justifications.

Perhaps this is why the idea of "naughting" oneself is so universal among the world's religions?
