...is going to roll out over the M6 soon, after a successful trial on the M42. The rest of the UK could follow soon!

Do you think this is a good idea? I think it isnt too bad, the system seems to work well enough but the real test will be when there is a major accident and we will see if the hard shoulder clears quick enough to allow the emergancey services through.

I do alot of travel on the M42 and it has help traffic flow there 10 fold. However I have never been witness to a big accident and seen how well it works then..

Surely if its congested in the aftermath of an accident they excess cars cant have anywhere to go?!

Sounds stupid. There are enough chances for idiots to cause accidents without another one.

Ye the M42 is alot more better now.. one draw back is you still get the w**kers in BMW lane jumping because one lane moves faster than the other..

I think its a very good idea. It seems to have proved itself to work and as monkey said, the test will be when there is an emergancy.

I cant see there being any problems

of course, the extra lane is only supposed to be used when you enter the motoway and leave at the next junction, makes sence with the way motorways are laid out.
But how many people will ignore that and drive across a junction from hard shoulder to hard shoulder because they wasnt paying attention?

I've been on the M42 when there was an accident, they had signs up saying the hard shoulder was closed all the way between the junctions the accident was in so the emergancy services could sort it , works well.

see i've seen a video on it and i thought when the traffic was really busy then they did just drive on the hard shoulder and every so often ( a certain distance) there was a largeish lay by

On the M42 there is areas for cars that have broken down. I was in a traffic queue when there was an acident and the as i call them "police wannerbes" traffic people, corner off lanes and make you drive around.. but... when its busy, there is speed reduction signs done to reduce the speed of the motorway giving less chance of an accident.

Definitely a good idea expands road capacity without the need to build more roads....although a Friends of the Earth spokesman on the radio this morning still tried to argue it was bad for the environment because it will encourage more people to drive
