The Yankees completed the three-game sweep with an impressive 5-0 shutout victory over the Chowderheads. Chien-Ming Wang was prolific in recording his 16th win of the season.
The Yankees got to Curt Schilling early, and the pitching held it together for their first shutout over the Red Sox in nearly 2 years.
There was plenty of drama in the final game of the series: Terry Francona was ejected. Yankees stud Joba Chamberlain was ejected for throwing over the head of Kevin Youkilis and the Yanks going for the sweep in front in of yet another sellout crowd.
In order for The Yankees to cut the lead in the AL East to 5 games, they needed to get to an aging Curt Schilling early.
The Bronx Bombers went right to work on him in the third. Robinson Cano led off the inning with a solo shot to deep center that gave them a 1-0 lead.
Chien-Ming Wang held the Red Sox in check all afternoon with his vast array of pitches and excellent command.
The Yanks went looking for more runs in the fifth. Robinson Cano extended their lead to 2-0 wen his solo home run landed in the seats in left center.
The Yankees would put the game out of reach in the eighth-inning. With one on, and one out, Bobby Abreu's double pushed across Derek Jeter to make the score 3-0. With two on, and one out, Bobby Abreu broke for third which caused an overthrow by Jason Varitek that allowed both Abreu and A-Rod to score. Yanks lead 5-0.
Joba Chamberlain relieved Wang and went an inning before getting ejected. Edwar Ramirez came in and saved the day by getting the final few outs to preserve the desperately needed sweep.
Wang, Chamberlain, and Ramirez allowed 0 runs, 2 hits, and 5 walks on the day.
Jeter and Cano went a combined 6-for-7 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs on the day.
