Gene Roddenberry had unusual and sometimes extreme ways of showing different kinds of behaviour. He was never original, though, as most of what he created was recycled and reengineered from someone else's recipe.
In this thread, I'd like to look at one of his more peculiar characters, who exhibits a kind of behaviour that I have always found both disturbing and perplexing.
In the Star Trek The Original Series episode, 'Whom Gods Destroy', Marta, a green skinned alien called an Orion, is a mental patient in one of the Star Trek universe's Federation institutes. She and a group of the other patients breaks out, takes control of the facility and trap Captain Kirk and Spock there. Their leader, Garth, tries to torture Kirk into submission and when he passes out, Marta brings him to her room and speaks of a way they can always be together... this involves attempting to kill him, in order to 'protect him' from Garth because Kirk is her lover and she must kill him.
Now, could someone please help me understand the psychology behind this rather twisted mindset?
I guess try I have seen the episode many times since it in the 60's.
it kind basely on the treatment the impression from the episode that to bring out garth from being insane to normal again.
kirk know Garth before, I remember right. garth was in the federation ,I think he was a captain of a starship. I remember right. garth thought he was some sort of god that kill races of aliens and even crew of his ship. I can't remember this episode that much, I saw last year on metv. the episode wasn't that much detail about grath's past.
garth's plan , garth's the head of facility, the doctor was in charge , know kirk as a good friend. the doctor want to kirk to visit the place to impressed him.
when kirk and spock visit the facility, garth was shape shifter disguise as the doctor. by the time, kirk and spock put the pieces together , they were trapped.
garth torture kirk to get him to conviced the enterprise to beam garth and his group up to take over the ship. kirk and spock had the password to scotty to beam them up. garth didn't know the password.
i figure out that Martha was crackers that fell in love with both kirk and garth. she choose kirk over garth, garth kill her for that.
i do agree with conflict about this episode, when a little stream and a bad acting by shatner. how he torured in this episode.
i think gene roodenberry was try how mental illiness was like back in the 60's or even future. gene was forced by nbc ( aired star trek in 60's) by censorship, how he show this process.
the mindset machine that garth was used on kirk, was like brainwashing like " the clockwork orange " . gene was use the machine take the insane or whatever out of garth. garth was destroy kirk's mind to even with federation.
the episode wasn't clear exactly what garth's motives was in the episode. i can see why conflict is confuse. now i am confuse by it myself.
