Gene Roddenberry had unusual and sometimes extreme ways of showing different kinds of behaviour. He was never original, though, as most of what he created was recycled and reengineered from someone else's recipe.

In this thread, I'd like to look at one of his more peculiar characters, who exhibits a kind of behaviour that I have always found both disturbing and perplexing.

In the Star Trek The Original Series episode, 'Whom Gods Destroy', Marta, a green skinned alien called an Orion, is a mental patient in one of the Star Trek universe's Federation institutes. She and a group of the other patients breaks out, takes control of the facility and trap Captain Kirk and Spock there. Their leader, Garth, tries to torture Kirk into submission and when he passes out, Marta brings him to her room and speaks of a way they can always be together... this involves attempting to kill him, in order to 'protect him' from Garth because Kirk is her lover and she must kill him.

Now, could someone please help me understand the psychology behind this rather twisted mindset?

I guess try I have seen the episode many times since it in the 60's.

it kind basely on the treatment the impression from the episode that to bring out garth from being insane to normal again.

kirk know Garth before, I remember right. garth was in the federation ,I think he was a captain of a starship. I remember right. garth thought he was some sort of god that kill races of aliens and even crew of his ship. I can't remember this episode that much, I saw last year on metv. the episode wasn't that much detail about grath's past.

garth's plan , garth's the head of facility, the doctor was in charge , know kirk as a good friend. the doctor want to kirk to visit the place to impressed him.

when kirk and spock visit the facility, garth was shape shifter disguise as the doctor. by the time, kirk and spock put the pieces together , they were trapped.

garth torture kirk to get him to conviced the enterprise to beam garth and his group up to take over the ship. kirk and spock had the password to scotty to beam them up. garth didn't know the password.

i figure out that Martha was crackers that fell in love with both kirk and garth. she choose kirk over garth, garth kill her for that.

i do agree with conflict about this episode, when a little stream and a bad acting by shatner. how he torured in this episode.

i think gene roodenberry was try how mental illiness was like back in the 60's or even future. gene was forced by nbc ( aired star trek in 60's) by censorship, how he show this process.

the mindset machine that garth was used on kirk, was like brainwashing like " the clockwork orange " . gene was use the machine take the insane or whatever out of garth. garth was destroy kirk's mind to even with federation.

the episode wasn't clear exactly what garth's motives was in the episode. i can see why conflict is confuse. now i am confuse by it myself.

both gene and rod and other creators and tv producers had a rough time this period because of " era of McCarthyism " Hollywood blacklist a lot of hollywoord writers , producers, screenwtiters back then.

everybody had to very carful, what they did in America, as well in Hollywood.

that wy 50's throught the early 70's, why you see different ways of simply times in America tv.

the more one dwells on it, the more complex/confusing it can become.

Sometimes, ya just gotta stop and ask yourself - how is all this 'dwelling' helping? Or, even, is all this 'dwelling' helping anyone, anywhere, in any way?

If the answer is not, or - then might be better to just stop!

Twisted for sure, doesn't/wouldn't make sense to saner people -- only to the twisted - wherever their twisted mind goes --- can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em - death sentence. Such is life.

here is the plot of " gods whom destroy ":

On stardate 5718.3, the Federation starship USS Enterprise arrives at the planet Elba II, an inhospitable world known for its very poisonous atmosphere and underground asylum for the few remaining Federation citizens that are criminally insane. The Enterprise brings with her a shipment of a new medicine that will at last cure the insanity.

Captain Kirk and First Officer Spock beam down to the facility with the shipment of drugs and meet with the facility director, Donald Cory (Keye Luke), who oversees the treatment of fifteen of the most dangerous mental patients in Federation custody. Along the way, one of the inmates, Marta, a mentally unstable Orion female, warns Kirk and Spock that their host, Dr. Cory, is not who they think he is.

They soon discover the real Cory is imprisoned in a cell, put there by the impostor, who is none other than Garth of Izar (Steve Ihnat), a former starship Captain and one of Kirk's personal heroes. Garth's crew had mutinied against him when he had gone insane, the result of injuries in a rescue mission. Aliens from Antos tried to teach Garth just enough shapeshifting abilities to heal said injuries; he taught himself complete shifting. Garth tried to attack Antos before his crew rebelled.

Garth imprisons Kirk and Spock and tries to beam himself to the Enterprise masquerading as Kirk. He plans to use it to track down his mutinous crew. When Chief Engineer Scott does not receive a certain countersign passcode from "Kirk" (the countersign to "queen to queen's level 3" is "queen to king's level 1" ), he refuses the beam up order. A force field is in operation which prevents Scott from attempting a rescue.

Garth later invites Kirk and Spock to a dinner where they hear Marta recite Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 which she claims she wrote herself. She then performs a strange "exotic dance" that Spock compares to a dance performed by Vulcan schoolchildren. In the meantime, Garth boasts about his incredible career as a starship captain, bragging that he has charted more planets and catalogued more star systems than any other man in history. Later, Kirk appears to confirm this point by reminding Garth that he was an admired and prototype starship captain. He fishes for Kirk's pass phrase, but Kirk doesn't fall for it.

Garth tries to get the code by torturing Doctor Cory and Kirk. This fails. Marta's seduction attempt of Kirk fails when Spock subdues her. The duo, Kirk and Spock, communicate with the ship. A concerned Kirk has Spock give the code but he cannot, as he is actually Garth.

Kirk is subdued again. The crew on the Enterprise learn they cannot break through the shield without killing many innocents. Garth puts on a coronation ceremony, declaring himself "Master of the Universe"; the other inmates are delighted. He states that he will be successful, more than others in history, such as Alexander the Great, Caeser, Napoleon, Hitler, Lee Kuan, and Krotus. He kills Marta, whom he has named consort, to demonstrate the power of an explosive he has created. Spock disables his guard, acquires a phaser and finds two Kirks in the control room.

Spock attempts to distinguish between the two by asking: "What maneuver was used against the Romulans near Tau Ceti?" One Kirk replies "the Cochrane Deceleration", but the other points out that it is a classic battle maneuver any good captain would know. The two Kirks begin to fight, but eventually one of them tells Spock to stun them both — to ensure the safety of the Enterprise. Knowing that only the real Kirk would make a demand like that (putting the safety of the ship ahead of his own), Spock stuns the other Kirk, who is revealed to be Garth.

With the matter resolved and Garth back in custody, control of the station is given back to Dr. Cory. The experimental drugs are administered to Garth and the other inmates who begin a long road to recovery.

I don't know. Why did that crazy prospector kidnap Michael Landon, hold him hostage, torture him and try to turn him into a psychotic madman in that one episode of Bonanza?

Something tells me the two are connected somehow...

skunky- I am not surprise since bonanza was on 14 years, I am sure that they would have an episode like that.

I think most American tv western shows in the 60's had the same kind about a nut that in cave that in gold mine or inside cave trapped the main character in tv show.

I was mainly poking fun at the OP's question.

I forgot the name of the episode, but it's a weird one for sure.

I grew up watching bonzana was a little boy into my early teenage years in on nbc on Tuesday night.

I try to remember that the episode, who was the old man. I couldn't remember the episode.

then I remember I was think on " metv " during week, they have " big valley "," bonzana: the lost episodes ( the basely pernell Roberts quit playing " adam cartwright ". )" gunsmoke ", and " the rifleman ".

most of these shows always have the main character or characters are trapped in a cave, that never fail in these series.

it is a true. with " lassie " timmy get trapped in a well, cave, or something and lassie always had rescue little timmy.

lassie had rescued timmy, his mother, june lockhart ( lost in space )to kick his ass, because he always late for dinner. ( twilite, that not truth , june never did that to timmy. it is a true, lassie always pee on timmy's leg. )
