Also, any pets that need walking, or feeding. Most likely their minds will slip right past that. And pets can really be a drain on us when we are emotionally down.

OMG The pets....her dog is due to give birth!!!! they thought she was going to deliver earlier today, it was announced on FB that the pups are coming!

Well...actually, that can be a very good thing, as the mother dog will stay out of their hair pretty much, while tending to her pups. Just make sure she's fed, and walked and such.

I found sky lanterns helpful, I wrote my messages and thoughts on them and sent them up into the sky when I lost my baby, my kids did that too, it helped a great deal! I'll get some for them too and if they want to do the same, they'll have them ready.

Plus puppies are always good at being cute which might make everyone's day that little bit better.

That's a great idea. We did that for my grandmother last year.

I just gotta say, you sound like a good friend to have in a crisis. It's so great to see someone reaching out for someone else's family, actively trying to help them out. It doesn't happen enough. I think just the lack of isolation will make the biggest difference to them.

Just try to talk to them the same way that you did before all this happened. Be the same friend.

My friend had a visit from the police this afternoon breaking the news that her husband had been found dead in his car, so far, all that I know is he took an over dose and rigged his car so it would fill up with fumes, I'm still in shock, I went straight to my friends house to offer some comfort as soon as I'd heard, obviously, the family are devastated, he leaves behind a wife, a 20 year old son and a 13 year old daughter.

I've had some people say to me its a very selfish act and some have said how brave to go through with killing himself.

I've never suffered depression nor been in a situation so desperate, that I can claim to have an insight as to what he was going through.

It was only a few days ago that he was in my house chatting to myself and my hubby, I would never have guessed a few days later he would be dead.

It's such a hard thing to come to terms with, how can I best offer my support, I'm so worried for my friend, she's got drinking issues and her hubby seemed to be the sound one of the family, I'm worried she's gonna totally fall apart and the kids will be minus 2 parents.

I am sorry for your friends loss.
Just some thoughts

Watch the kids this could lead to big changes in the way they start to act. IE drugs and Alcohol or high sexual activity.

The children of a person who commits suicide is must more likely to do the same. The male child more than the female

One thing that will be hard to work with is they will want to blame themselves not the father.IMO you need to keep repeating the father had an illness and he made that choice. There was nothing they could do to stop this. i would talk to a professional before doing this

To all whom have posted that in their opinion suicide is selfish and cowardly all I have to say to you is that you are not educated on Mental Illnesses in the least or you would not be putting up such ignorant comments.

That said: Silly_Me, be there for her and let her lead and take your cues from her and all should work out. No words can bring any comfort at this point. Listening is the best instrument you have right now.. Hope she gets on with things soon for her own mental health.

I honestly don't think it's all that selfish... Unless of course you have people honestly dependant on you.

^^This. Exactly this.

I wonder how things are going for those left behind over these past months? Have things regained some kind of normal sense? How's everyone coping?

if the suicidal person is constantly suffering with mental problems ...depression ,hopelessness etc ,and if his/her friends and family know this, then it might possibly be argued that rather than the suicide being selfish it is in fact those people around him/her who are selfish for expecting him/her to carry on suffering for them.

Yeah. Those damned selfish little kids expecting mommy/daddy to stick around and not leave them scarred for life.

the problem with suicide is that by the time a person gets to that state of mind, nothing can stop them if they are so focused that it is the only solution. i firmly believe the only way somebody can ever truly understand this is to have been in that situation. the majority of people who say its a cowardly act have more than likely not been there so cant feel waht it is like to be in such a mental state

People committing suicide don't see the 'selfish' aspect of it, most of them see quite the opposite.

I think if they did a study they would find that most suicide victims felt as if no one would miss them, no one wanted anything to do with them and that they were only a burden on the few that were close to them.
