asmodeus - I have experienced quite a few, New Zealand sits on two different plate boundaries.

Judging by the website, I suspect the earthquake I felt was an aftershock. About half an hour ago a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit the lower south island and that probably loosened up the fault line a bit. I'm really concerned actually as although it did strike a fairly unpopulated area it was very shallow at only 5km deep. Hope everything is ok down there!

Hope that's it with the earthquakes and everyone including yourself is fine when it's all over and done with.

You're taking it a lot calmer than I ever would.

Tornadoes I can do, but earthquakes? I don't think so!

Ooooh, I feel for you
I live in Meckering, aka the Earthquake Capital of Western Australia.
Last one was 41 years ago, but who knows what's in store for the future?

Earthquakes are a part of life here. I suspect this article will continue to update overnight but this is what is published now:

A 6.6 quake is big even by our standards!

Wow, 6.6 is bad, ours was 6.9, destroyed the whole township and local towns too

it really did strike well and truly out of the way: https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/3124785g-maps.html

The other article I posted earlier states that it was felt strongly in all the major cities down in the bottom part of the South Island, and my sister is down in Dunedin in one of the places where it was felt strongly. I'm sure she is ok but i'm still waiting to hear back from her.

the earthquake which sparked this topic was an aftershock, as I suspected. Down in the same area part of the country, no longer on land but offshore. It was a magnitude 6.1.

And my sister has given me a text back and she is all sweet
