Anything interesting happened?
The public laundry is i think the only place in Paris, where you can start talking to a stranger on any subject and it's not strange.
A month ago I was waiting for my things to dry in a laundry around my block in Paris. Next to me a 50y old man was reading a paper, he was neatly shaved, his hair carefully combed, with that sort of exaggerated care of a polish miner on a sunday afternoon. He was also waiting for his things that were drying in a dryer next to mine. We were alone and he soon started a typical conversation about apt rentals, french left-wing demonstrations etc... 5 minutes later a women came in with an empty bag, emptied one of the drying machines and left. I looked around and all the washing and drying machines were now empty except of mine. I looked at the man and he seemed to have understood. He ended up telling me he's on a 3 day release from a mental hospital nearby and didn't have to courage to go home, but felt the urgent need to talk to people. I didn't quite understand how did these prozaic laundry chat filled his need for contact. He told me that it was in the laundries that he had the most meaningful conversations.
Have you ever had one while waiting for your clothes to dry? Or you had a washing machine all your life like a decent citizen? | |
