Canada not only allows gays to openly service in military, we pay for sex change operations for troops. We also allow troops to dress in the gender they relate to, even if they have not had surgery to change their sex yet, if you are male living as female, you dress as female and vice versa.

Do you think one day all countries military will adopt such policies? Do you see this as a good or a bad thing?

They consulted psychiatrists who determined when in a body of the wrong gender, they will be depressed, have higher rate of suicide and a host of other things. They want transsexuals to be who they are meant to be and want to help them with that.

I don't think it's the military's place though, to pay for such operations; otherwise, I see nothing wrong. Everybody treated as equal.

Why not?
It's not like a nose job... It's considered a valid medical procedure in almost all of the industrialized world.

Would you be against the military paying for physical therapy if the injury didn't happen in combat?

Yeah, I would be against it. I don't feel it's the military's responsibility; nor for one who wasn't injured in combat. Chances are, in the second instance, they wouldn't be accepted into the military in the first place, I wouldn't think.

People know from a very young age, 'who' they are.
To expect the military to pay for such operation is wrong in my opinion, indeed, may even promote people to want to enter the military just to have such an operation.

I can respect that opinion... While I don't agree, at least you're being fair about it.

I am, however, all for the idea of a charity organization, to help those in need of such operations, who can't affort to pay for it themselves, to get the help they need.

If the injury in question would impact the quality of that person's execution of his or her duties, yes, the PT should be paid for by the government.
If not, no.

Would a sex change enhance the soldier's combat performance?...probably not.

If the U.S. were to adapt a policy like Canada's, Will there be folks joining just to get a medical procedure that in most cases would be deemed as elective?(taking advantage of free health care).

Those are questions that need to be answered before any such idea becomes practiced policy.

Oprah had a man on that changed into a woman, then became a lesbian. How f***ed up is that? He/she/it might be in the Canadian military by now.

I am feeling disappointed right now. I mean no disrespect to anyone on here and am not looking to start anything. I made this thread hoping we could have an intelligent and adult like conversation/discussion on this policy of Canadian military. I am not looking for anyone to agree with it or not, I want people to be honest about how they feel. However, I do not see a reason to poke fun of these people. Perhaps I do not know the proper terms to use and there is much I do not know about this lifestyle but please, can we please, not make jokes about these people and their lifestyle. We can agree or disagree but these are people, they are not it's, and they do not deserve to be made fun of.

Its almost 2011 and I have no idea why we still have to make gay jokes, transsexual jokes etc. Just let people be as long as no one is hurting another person.

I'm quite disappointed and sad at some of these comments.

Can we please focus on the topic, the topic for discussion are gays being allowed to serve openly. transsexuals and transvestites being allowed to dress in gender they identify with and how military will pay for sex change and if we agree or disagree with that. Also, do you think other countries will follow or not? Also, I do have this question, why do you think one country does not care and other countries seem to care too much about being straight/gay and if one was born male or female and changed?

Thank you to all posters who provided great input in a respectable manner. Again, no hard feelings and not looking to start anything. I just want a discussion.

I think it's a good thing. I mean legally and for all intents and purposes someone who has changed sex is the sex they have changed to therefore should wear the uniform of the gender they are.

I believe, if I read correctly, they will allow a person to dress in other gender prior to the sex change. A male is allowed to live as female and dress as female if that is the gender he identifies with. He does not need to have had the surgery yet.

I think this will help greatly with psychological effects of not identifying with current gender, being allowed to serve and live as you feel, not how you were born.
