Now, I can understand that back in the days before mass communication, it took three months to get the votes fully counted from all over a huge country, so an inauguration in January made sense after a November election. But is this circus really needed in the 21st century..?

We all knew the result on the day. Trump is President. End of. Couldn't the US equivalent of Pickfords have just trundled up to the White House in the afternoon after the election and moved the tasteful gold bed and electric pink Trump soft furnishings in, and be done with the whole business..? The world could carry on turning and the world's news agencies could return to reporting the news, rather than this wretchedly interminable Presidential Razzmatazz Show.

In case nobody noticed, people have died in an avalanche in Italy, there's a war going on in Syria and a massive fissure on the Larsson ice shelf in Antarctica is predicted to produce an iceberg a quarter the size of Wales.

Just thought I'd mention a couple of things that are actually happening right now. Just in case nobody noticed.
