got a couple questions here. i am looking for some ram for my comp. {upgradeing from 256meg to 1 gig (512x2)}

what is the difference between registered and unbuffered ram? how do i know which one i need?

what is ECC? and how do i know if i need it or not?

do i need the same speed as what is already in my comp? and if not what speed should i get?

does the voltage matter? if so how do i know what voltage i need?

what is a good brand to buy?

and last what is a good site to get ram and hard drives for low prices? i am checking newegg.com right now.

I would think you'd know more about these things than me but I recently put an extra 128meg in my crappy old computer. It was ram that I had from another computer. I just put it in the slot, it fittted in and worked fine I think if you're worried about specs look up your computers ram type on the computers web page (I went to IBM) and it should tell you what you need to get. And if you're really confused take out some ram and take it to your local computer store and show them and they'll let you know what you need

U should check the specs for ure mainboard. There u will see wich types and speeds ure mainboard can work with.
And u dont have to worry for placing a bad one, and like that damaging ure computer. With ram, that never happens, worst thing that could happen, is that it wont use it. So nothing to worry about that?
hehehe, voltage doesnt mather for ordinary rams, only for industrial rams. And lets not call it ram, its Memory. If u could name me the mainboard u have, i could say the best quality/price possible memory for u.
Im in the branch u know
And i readed a interesting information. U gonna upgrade to 1gb? If u are planning to use 2 lats instead of 1. I can recommend u the dual-clocked rams. Thats 2 x 512 ddr2 ram, clocked exactly the same speed and bandwidth... If u use that sort of system as a memory, u wont regret it.
I personally have 2 x 1gb DDR3 dubbel-sided from Kingston, and never ever had problems with it.

So the actual question is, how much and what speed ure mainboard can support, and how much u wanna spend?

With ram its better to get quality rather than the cheapest stuff you can get.

I have corsair XMS series and i love it plus it has a lifetime warranty. I buy stuff from newegg.com all the time and now its the only place i shop. I don't even bother looking in stores anymore because I know its cheaper on newegg.com. It has the best deals and ships with fedex saver in 2-3 days.
