More than ?8m will be spent over the next two years in a bid to reduce youth re- offending in England & Wales the government has announced.

Justice minister Claire Ward said the money will be spent on resettlement programmes for young offenders when they leave prison.

Ms ward said breaking the cycle of offending was the key to helping young people and creating safer communities.

A resettlement programme ?? Does that mean we are exporting them to another country

I'd imagine resettlement is moving them away from the places that they offended.

They do it with sex workers/drug addicts, even if it isn't far away they'll move them to the next town because they don't know where to go to work/get the drugs it makes reoffending less likely as they actively have to go looking for it.

I think it's a good idea but should only be used as a last resort when education and rehabilitation doesn't work, moving them out of one town and into another will not stop the problem, just make it someone else's business to sort out.

It depends what the problem is, honestly it does work for certain people in certain situations, e.g. sex workers, especially street workers. In Southampton there's the working women's project which has been set up to help the sex workers in Southampton either stay safe/get out of working on the streets or whatever and part of what they offer is a chance to relocate from Southampton to somewhere like Fareham/Eastleigh, smaller towns on the outskirts of Southampton but they're far enough away that they aren't going to know the places to work or the people around them.

It sounds bizarre but really something as simple as moving 20 minutes down the road can stop certain crimes.

I can understand that working for sex workers. We have a problem here where young boy offenders are sent here from other parts of the country. Our local council gets paid to take them by the boys local council. Then we have problems in our town, car theft, property damage etc. Its seems that the problem is just moved not dealt with.

I hope you do not have them exported to the US. We have a new crop here in California. Our authorities have no idea on wha to do with them.
