Statistics

I've listened to various programmes on the radio recently when results from various polls or other statistics have been discussed. What gets me is how readily some people will accept these figures, just because a talking head or pundit has come out with them on one medium or another. Don't they realise how figures/percentages can be manipulated to prove one hypothesis or another? Demographics come into the equations as well, don't they? "Lies, damn lies and statistics". Rant over (I've turned the radio off, now).

I suppose you're right. Having said that, some otherwise intelligent and commonsensical people that I know believe rigidly in anything in print or broadcast. Worrying.

Most statistics make no sense to me, the UK has 60million people yet they news tell it like if its 60people...

A lot of them make no sense full stop. That presumably is how some powers that be like it....

Sometimes I get the phone call polls.I will answer the questions as good as I can.When I dont really know the answers.I answer it as good as I can,
They must be using these polls for some statistics

I imagine they do. In future I'm going to give the most outlandish answers I can think of.
