OK, so I'm trying to assign my computer to a static ip address but when I go to click on my Local Area Connection properties (located in Control Panel>Network Connections) the folder closes and the toolbar dissapears and I cant access it. Does anyone know how I can eradicate this problem or find an alternative method of making a static ip? Thanks.

try in safe mode with network support. (press f8 after POST)
weird that the network connection folder shuts off.

and no pete, you can assign a static ip making all computers connected to yours have a subnetted address.

i wonder if there's a 3rd party application affecting explorer when you open network connections folder. can you access the wizard?

you can click start, run and enter the following command: icwconn1

It should open the network connection wizard.

Yeah, I can connect to that. I get the options of "Creating a new internet", "using my account with another ISP" and "manually configure my telephone or netweork Internet".

why not right clicking on the lan icon on the taskbar?
choose properties
edit your settings (make sure dhcp is disabled)
enter your static ip

There isn't a properties setting there, it just takes me to the Network Connections folder.

there's one - when you choose status, it will open a new window and you pick properties.

When it appears in the taskbar (which I can only get it to do when I turn off the router) that's the only option I have. Also, when I try to access the properties, status, or disable the connection it does the folder crashing thing.
I dont think there is anything I can do to access it; is there an alternative way of creating a static ip?

Well, I tried that and it didn't work, but my main issue now is how I can't access the properties of my Local Area Connection. For the record there is a wireless router set up on my comp, with a laptop downstairs picking up the wireless connection. Could this be a reason why I can't get to the properties of my Local Area Connection in the Network Connections folder?
