Should Sock Puppet Profiles Be Banned?

This is one of the few places I've ever come across that allows it. Elsewhere, it's a no no, as it's often considered to be for questionable, or malicious reasons.

That's not to say it doesn't happen, but it gives an easy way of nipping that resource of abuse by it being against the rules.

But not everyone is "noble" in their intent. It has caused some problems and hurt feelings.

I think its easier to just punish the ones that do get out of hand, and actually go as far as to break TOS, rather than take away the options of everyone.

I do have a second account myself.

What reason does a user have to need a second account?

Out of all the sock puppet accounts, I would be really sad to see that one gone. Max makes me laugh at times, the mischief he gets into and talking about his womens.

I think there are more positive reasons for creating sock puppets than negative ones.

I've never had 2 accounts at one time, but I did change my accounts many times and everyone knows that.

I say, if it's not harming anyone or doing any damage why persecute them.

This is a forum.

Some come for fun, some come for learning, some for debating and yet some for harming. The latter would be the only exception to the ban rule I would think other than the obvious ones [those that are trying to get around a 'ban'.

I say, live and let live and if you don't like sock puppets, block them all if you actually KNOW for FACT they are SOCK PUPPETS, and the only way to really know that is if the sock puppet tells you who they are or they find out through a moderator which is never the option because the mods can't out anyone, it's private info.

Would taking away the option make it far harder to freely action the abuse?

As far as 'malice' goes, it's not exclusive only to sock puppets.

Many people on forums are malicious with their original usernames and they aren't banned for it.

It's not always clear to users if profiles are puppet profiles though.

I think what he is getting at though are maybe those who he was 'friends' with under one username treated him poorly under another. I think that is what I am hearing here.....

Maybe he feels more betrayed than anything, and rightly so, and perhaps that isn't an issue for TFS but an issue for the people who choose to act in such a manner.
