There was a thread that asked; Who's your favorite serial killer. I thought most fascinating. I've read a lot on the subject and always walk away shaking my head. Why? I'm not sure; many people do horrible things to each other, but this is not just a murderer, they can't control it. At any given time there may be a serial killer among you and they won't give you a clue. Most times they're very charming and frequently handsome; hence, the serial killer story.
A murder can be many things. An ordinary murder can be a reaction, an impulsive response to a quarrel or an insult, or it may be a calculated murder for gain, whether money, self -protection or power. These aren't serial killings.
Serial murders are different from regular murders in many ways. A serial murderer has an inbuilt, long-term programme to kill, and very ofteh the identity of the victim is of little or no consequence. A serial killer goes on killing uncontrollably until caught and stopped. A perculiarity of serial killing is that there is often a lull in time between murders, a cooling off period that may go on for months or possibly years during which no killing happens and then it begins.
Serial killers are difficult to catch because there is often no relationship between the killer and the victim. The victims may all have something in common at least in the mind of the killer. They may all be short brunettes wearing red skirts. They are a substitute for a woman the killer really wishes to destroy. He often sees his victims as completely worthless; this is why he often selects his victims from certain sectors of society. migrant workers, vigrants, prostitutes, rent boys, runaways, missing children, single elderly women. It is not cowardice or sadism that gets them to pick a specific victim; their powerlessness makes them easier targets, and there won't be relatives looking for them.
Serial killers are of many different types, but it is possible to sketch the most common type. He's usually 25-35 years old, average intelligence and chooses his victims from his own ethnic group. The age of the victims varies between his own specific interests. There is great variability between their backgrounds. Some are socially outsiders, socially inept, but some appear completely normal. They may be married, have children and hold down fulltime jobs. For them their personality has a Jeckyll and Hyde type of flip. These are the most difficult for police to solve. Ted Bundy is a prime example of a serial murderer who functioned well in society. Even when his coworkers noticed he looked like the profile they laughed it off.
The next is the mass murderer who kills many people at once. Serial killers may murder the same number of people, but over a long period of time.
There's also another type of serial killer known as a missionary. He feels it his duty to eliminate what he considers the scum of society.
He is the puritanical protitute killer, the homophobic-gay killer.
The third type is the thriller. These are sadistic killers-Jack the kipper. A fourth is a lust killer. He gets sexual gratification from torturing his victims to death.
A fifth is a tyrant. Heads of state often legitimize their kills. Hitler is a prime example.
What makes people into serial killers? Do you know, or think you know? I will answer this later.
Part of this is written by me; the facts are by Rodney Castleden from a book called 'Serial Killers'.
Women serial killers are rare, that interests me.
