I think it's great. We can really help out a lot of people in need. They're different then other methods of research because stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves longer than other cells. Stem cells can also replace some bone marrow, muscle, and brain cells.
They could potentially treat Parkingson's disease, diabetes, and heart disease. And they are particularly helpful in cell-based therapy.

I see no objetionable reason.

Great! But shouldn't matter much. Current research doesn't rely upon human embryonic donors (aborted fetuses) so enacted restrictions don't apply and haven't hindered research for several years.

What are the drawbacks to stem cell research?

If it were viable, the private market would be pouring money into it.

Nothing like government spending.....or "investing" as some would like to call it now....on useless research.

For me it is purely selfish reasons. Apparently they have made progress and hope to regenerate eyes in mice or rats through the use of stem cells and since I have one eye that is next to useless it gives me a bit of hope.... sadly at my age it probably will never happen.

What the scientists are using are zygotes and embryos. Once the baby becomes viable, it's then called a fetus.

Depending on the laws where the research is taking place, depends on how long they can do research on a zygote/embryo/fetus. For instance if it were Maryland, they wouldn't be able to use an embryo if it were over 21 weeks (the considered viable mark).

Btw, I'm not 100% sure on the Maryland law, this is what I looked up a few months ago. It may have changed since then.

Ummm... most people aren't aware that you can get the same exact same info from a strand of hair as you can from a fetus.

More info.

That's all fine and well, however in the article they make it seem like its a possiblity not as in they are already using it.

It is also stated that hair folicles and can be used for blood, smooth organ muscles, and skin/tissue cells, while embryonic stem cells can be used for brain cells, muscle cells, ect. And can help treat (potentially cure) Parkinson's disease (my grandfather suffers from it), AIDS, leukemia, lymphoma, other cancers, birth defects, certain therapies, the list goes on.

As you can see, embryonic stem cells do far more than hair folicle stem cells.
