Ask.Simple.

Make sure the sites your linking to are a theme similar to yours so it can be a potential traffic 'driver' to theirs.

When I started a website to promote my uncles business, it is extremely hard to get traffic to your site initially, so link exchanges are the second best way to do this.

I advise you to SEO your site properly first, then link exchange.

Then, as i said, ask. =]

they wont give you any banner or link for free on the front page. building traffic is a long and painful process.

Be careful when it comes to link exchanges. Google cottoned onto those ages ago. If you go with one of ill repute you could do your rankings harm rather than good.

There are plenty of resources on the web which discuss various strategies for increasing back linking to your site.

The best way is by posting quality content that people will want to link to anyway (without you having to ask).

Another good idea is to submit it to DMOZ as it has a good reputation, and the sites listed on this directory get indexed up by Google and other search engines.
